What is the story of RunRewa?

The vision for RunRewa was born out of our What Hope Youth (WHY) programme in 2017 when a couple of youth leaders trained and smashed out a half and a full marathon. This ignited a “Running Project” for our local youth that involved 8 weeks of training for a 10km run event at Mount Manuganui. Although they were not experienced runners, they soon grew in endurance through the support of the team.

This was the start of “Swerve Fitness”, leading to more training at the Mountfort Park grandstand, and more trips to other events around the country. One of the events we entered included the International Queenstown Marathon, where youth entered the 10km and 21km races. The achievement of finishing created a powerful vibe and we began to dream of bringing this vibe to our own community. RunRewa is the result of this dream.

Who are we?

We are a community group called What Hope Community Trust. Over five years ago we started a community youth group based at the Manurewa Sports Centre with connection and belonging as our core values. Since then we have done after school programmes, holiday programmes, youth camps, fitness programmes, and a sound social enterprise.

All of our initiatives are focused on relationship and connection. A recent Harvard study, the longest of its kind, revealed the importance of quality relationships and their impact on long life and good mental health. From relationships within your family to those within your community, healthy, supportive relationships are the kind we want to facilitate.
